COMMUNITY NEWS

  • New construction on Circle Road at S 23rd and Wood Ave began this week as part of the MY35 project and will last one month. Local residents, including Alicia Robinson, report speeding drivers on detour routes and growing concerns about road safety.  KXXV
  • Waco is set to transform a half block of Seventh Street at Austin Avenue into a pedestrian plaza soon. The project aims to create a walkable space that benefits local residents and businesses.  Waco Tribune-Herald

CULTURE NEWS

  • Waco resident Kermit Oliver, a longtime mail carrier and self-taught artist, became the only American selected by Hermès to design silk scarves in 1984. His work, celebrated during Black History Month (a testament to local talent), now appears in museums and on international runways.  KCENTV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Midway school board will meet on March 6 to discuss a proposal to close Speegleville Elementary School and save ($1.3 million), according to Superintendent Chris Allen.  Waco Tribune-Herald
  • Baylor University regents (this week) raised tuition and fees and approved a new biomedical engineering degree, noting increased research funding and higher graduation rates as part of efforts to boost academic strength.  Waco Tribune-Herald

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Kent George is now Waco’s full-time chief economic development officer (he served as interim since late 2024) and will lead the city’s economic development efforts.  Waco Tribune-Herald

  • Major League Fishing's Bass Pro Tour and Fish-Hunt Outdoor Expo will take place at Lake Waco + a downtown hotel on March 7 and 8, promising local fishing enthusiasts a lively event filled with fish stories.  Waco Tribune-Herald
