COMMUNITY NEWS

  • KCEN, Fabled Bookshop & Cafe, Literacy ConneXus and Central Texans will hold a book drive from April 16 to April 30, and a donation event is scheduled for April 25 from 9 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. — at Fabled Bookshop in Waco where donors will be entered into a prize drawing.  KCENTV
  • Waco ISD Warehouse Services Director Ron Willis was honored as Outstanding Volunteer of the Year for Region 5 by the Texas Parks Department on March 29 at McKinney Falls State Park—he volunteered 127 hours in 2024 and taught 636 people about geocaching while balancing both full-time and part-time work.  KCENTV

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Developer Peter Ellis secured a permit to convert the old HEB building on Austin Avenue into a Texas-based grocery store, seven retail spaces and 10 loft apartments in Downtown Waco — the store is not HEB and its opening date is yet to be set.  KXXV
  • Oncor Electric Delivery Co. will expand the substation at 25th Street and Park Lake Drive later this year—this upgrade is the latest step in a series of improvements in our area.  Waco Tribune-Herald

CRIME NEWS

  • Drivers in Bellmead grew more cautious after violent arson attacks on Tesla vehicles on March 29 triggered nationwide protests and a local driver said she now parks her car with extra care as the FBI began investigating the incidents as domestic terrorism.  KXXV
  • Waco police are asking the public for help to identify the driver in a fatal hit and run on Marlin Highway last month—officials believe the car was a black Chevy Cruz from 2016 to 2018.  Waco Tribune-Herald

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Baylor University is hosting several events during Sexual Assault Awareness Month to raise awareness and educate the campus community about preventing sexual violence. The schedule starts with an event today from 3 to 4 p.m. at Fountain Mall and will include sessions such as a self-defense class on April 22 and Denim Day on April 30—helping residents learn about safety—planned by the Equity, Civil Rights, and Title IX Office.  FOX 44
  • Parents in Central Texas are learning to talk with their children about bullying and violence after a Killeen middle school student died earlier this month—licensed counselor Camella Jones recommends five-minute one-on-one talks and role-playing scenarios at home. She says these talks help children feel safe and remind them to share any worries with a teacher or staff member.  KXXV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The McLennan County Sheriff's Office is rolling out body cameras today as part of a phased plan that starts with 45 deputies receiving them — officials say the $58,650 grant will boost training, policy reviews, and evidence collection. Leaders said they delayed the purchase to let technology improve and prices drop.  KCENTV
