CRIME NEWS
- ➤ A man was found dead with multiple gunshot wounds in an apartment on the 600 block of N. Hewitt Drive on Thursday evening April 3 and police responded at 11:15 p.m.—a suspect fled in a car while witnesses were questioned with no arrests made. FOX 44
- ➤ Police arrested 35-year-old Vicklyn Beeman—found inside a renter’s home on Hubby Avenue after she used the shower and took clothes—and charged her with burglary; she claims she thought the house was for rent and remains in McLennan County Jail. FOX 44
- ➤ Waco police said 51-year-old Christan Chae Walker was shot on Apple Lane Wednesday at 6:18 a.m. and taken to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead while the investigation continues with no arrest made. FOX 44
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Baylor University hosted eight events for Sexual Assault Awareness Month to break the stigma around sexual assault. At its Empowerment Journey, students went through stations to learn about help, wrote kind notes and filled 141 donation bags for the Advocacy Center—its campus fountain was lit in teal at 7 p.m. on Thursday. - ➤ Bobby Horner, a longtime Waco development official, retired on Feb. 28 after 23 years at City Hall and now stays busy by mentoring students at Texas State Technical College and guiding tours downtown. He joined a SkillsUSA event in Corpus Christi this week and will chair a city time capsule project — showing his continued dedication to Waco’s growth. Waco Tribune-Herald
- ➤ Waco will apply for a $15 million federal grant to fund the first phase of its downtown redevelopment plan that will build a 7-acre park along Barron’s Branch. City officials said the park will include La Pila Plaza, the Calle Dos footbridge and a manmade stream—features designed to honor local heritage while allowing local tax money to be used on other needs.
