- ➤ Vanguard students fanned out across Waco on Friday for their annual Emma's Day public service effort—named in memory of a student who died in a car crash in 2000. Waco Tribune-Herald
- ➤ Richland Mall opened its Easter Bunny's Garden on April 3 to let shoppers take free photos with the Easter Bunny and purchase photo packages through the Easter season. The mall is open Monday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., Saturday from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Sunday from noon to 6 p.m.—pet photos are offered on Mondays and the mall is closed on Easter Sunday. CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Hewitt Police investigated a fatal shooting that happened Thursday, April 3rd at 11 p.m. at Brookside Apartments on N. Hewitt Drive where 27-year-old Kyle Mitchell was pronounced dead after an argument escalated when 26-year-old Keimori Taylor retrieved a handgun—an arrest warrant has been issued for Taylor and the investigation continues. EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Waco ISD officials are working on new bus routes—program changes and school transfer policies—to match attendance zone changes approved last week for next school year after Alta Vista will close. The district will share more details as planning continues. Waco Tribune-Herald
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Waco ISD Chief of Police Craig Goodman said the department urgently needs more funding to keep officers and ensure student safety as rising costs and state mandates push this school year's budget nearly to $3.5 million; he said increasing salaries from $50,000—$57,000 to $60,000—$70,000 is needed to retain talent. HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Senate Bill 25 will require products to show large print labels with risky ingredients—aimed at making it easier for buyers to understand—and will create a Texas Nutrition Advisory Committee and require physical activity and nutrition classes in schools if approved. Dietician Kayley Gorge said kids are unhealthier than ever—leading to lower grades and less school success—and the bill could help reduce obesity and related health issues. KXXV
