  • Cameron Park Zoo in Waco recorded nearly 70,000 visitors last March, a 30% increase from the previous year, with almost 49,000 coming during spring break—a 37% jump over last year's break numbers. The zoo noted that one-fifth of its guests traveled from 50 to 100 miles away and that its new penguin encounter exhibit is offered Thursday through Sunday.  KCENTV

  • Waco Hyundai will start building a new 50,000-square-foot dealership near New Road and Interstate 35 next week with a $15 million investment—this project will add space for 750 vehicles and 32 technician bays, while Gray Reed upgrades its office at 900 Washington Ave and Tikka House opens a new Indian restaurant near South Valley Mills Drive. Meanwhile, Graphic Packaging International is building a $1 billion paper mill in Texas Central Industrial Park to create jobs, Walgreens faces a potential $100 million settlement over prescription pricing, Walmart is constructing a 310,000-square-foot dairy plant with FabArc Steel Supply’s help, James Avery released a Mother’s Day ice cream charm with Blue Bell, Marie’s Bistro at the airport has closed, and gas prices are expected to drop soon.  Waco Tribune-Herald
  • Preston Granger and Corey Ray opened Digi Golf Club on April 4th in Waco—this 24/7 virtual golf simulator is the only facility of its kind. Corey Ray said the business honors his late father—whose love of the game inspired the idea for easier access to global courses.  KCENTV

CULTURE NEWS

  • Creative Waco and the Waco Indie Film Festival announced that the Texas House officially recognized the short film The Heart of Texas, which won a scriptwriting competition and has been praised for its skill and emotion. The film tells the story of country singer Janie May and her friend in a time of crisis, and Representative Pat Curry (District 56) honored it for showcasing Texas storytelling.  FOX 44

  • McLennan Community College and Table for Two will host a free Hospitality Workforce Information Session on Monday, April 28 at 6 p.m. inside the college conference center in Waco, where restaurant owners, hotel managers, and industry leaders will network and share ideas on attracting, training, and keeping workers in the local hospitality sector.  KCENTV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • TxDOT and Silver Creek Construction, Inc. will begin a road rehabilitation project on Highway 84 from Valley Mills Drive to BU 77 on Monday, April 14. The project will include overlay, bridge repairs, and new striping with lane closures in place until early 2026 — travelers are urged to use caution.  FOX 44
