BUSINESS NEWS

  • Potbelly plans to bring new sandwich shops to Waco and Killeen as part of an eight-year expansion. Jignesh and Nitin Patel increased their plan from six to 15 shops—this effort supports an incentive program that offers reduced fees for early openings.  KCENTV
  • Hotel developer Kenny Bhakta completed three hotels along Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard in East Waco after delays from the pandemic, with the Holiday Inn Express receiving its occupancy certificate on Jan. 16. City officials said he worked closely with the city to secure needed TIF extensions — keeping valuable tax breaks intact on a nearly $22 million investment.  Waco Tribune-Herald

  • A Waco detective used undercover operations—hiding his phone—to gather evidence inside illicit massage parlors that exploited immigrant women and secured charges against the owner while ensuring the victims were not arrested, a method now seen as a model for fighting human trafficking.  Waco Tribune-Herald
  • Today a break-in at Waco Color Studio was captured on surveillance showing a suspect who smashed the window with a rock and stole cash, checks, a key, and valuables—forcing owner Mercedes Stovall to cancel appointments before reopening.  KXXV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Federal student loan collections resumed yesterday as the government began collecting on defaulted loans, prompting borrowers—including local professors—to face steep monthly payments amid rising costs—Dr. Pedro Reyes said his payment could exceed $1,000 while he manages higher living expenses.  KXXV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Marlin residents have been without water service since last Wednesday when the city's water system failed, leading to school and business closures while volunteers distributed bottled water. Governor Abbott declared a disaster for Falls County—officials approved $200,000 for portable water treatment plants expected Tuesday and set a special council meeting on May 7 to extend the disaster declaration for 30 days.  KCENTV
  • McLennan County celebrates National Treatment Court Month by honoring its Recovery, Veterans’ Treatment, and Mental Health Courts—programs that reduce reoffending—and announces it has received a $15,160 Texas Bar Foundation grant to fund the Pathway to Recovery program that provides sober living home rent for treatment court participants.  KXXV
