GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Hewitt homeowner Sheila Smith saved nearly $500 by protesting her increased property taxes on her older home with needed repairs last year, using photos and repair quotes to build her case. • Waco is planning to turn a field near the convention center into a public park costing over $50+ million as a key step in a $167 million downtown redevelopment. City leaders will apply for a $15 million federal grant from the National Park Service to help complete the park by 2027.  KCENTV
  • Texas lawmakers passed a bill that will let voters decide in November whether to use $3 billion in state funds to create a research institute to advance Alzheimer’s and dementia research—if approved, the governor will name a nine-member oversight committee to manage the effort modeled on a state cancer institute.  KXXV
