EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Waco and Midway ISD superintendents said today that the Senate education committee’s $8-billion funding proposal restricts how extra revenue is used and does not fully support teachers, staff, and key programs. Lawmakers will hold a public hearing today on the proposal before negotiating further with Gov.-Abbott. Waco Tribune-Herald
- ➤ Voters in Oglesby approved a nearly $10M bond that will expand the new Career and Technical Education facility and add a shared sports field while also allowing the district to pay off existing debt (teachers said the measure had been a long time coming). The bond passed with strong community support, and it marks the first bond of its size in decades to address growing enrollment challenges. KXXV

- ➤ On Tuesday, May 13, Councilmember Alice Rodriguez passed the torch to Isabel Lozano after serving over 26 years on City Council. The City of Waco thanked her for her leadership and Mayor Jim Holmes announced that a park in her honor will open in fall 2026—marking her many contributions. City of Waco
- ➤ Whitney's mayoral race remains undecided as Janice Sanders led by one vote while Zach Hamlin supporters requested a recount after two provisional ballots were added due to coding issues—several locals urged a runoff to resolve the election process concerns. KXXV
- ➤ Mayor Charles Wilson and newly elected council members Jonathan Olvera, Cody Daniel, and Ronnie Hurst were sworn into office Monday night at a Lacy Lakeview city council meeting. The ceremony marked a new chapter in leadership + city staff, fellow council members, and local residents attended the event. KXXV
- ➤ At the May 13 council meeting, Waco swore in returning councilmembers Darius Ewing for District Four and George Chase for District Five along with newcomer Isabel Lozano for District Two on two-year terms. - ➤ The Waco-McLennan County Public Health District today confirmed a case of measles in McLennan County—its first known infection in 2025. The unvaccinated minor was tested at a Central Texas facility and officials found no public exposures. KXXV
