BUSINESS NEWS
- ➤ Three Waco restaurateurs have been named among statewide finalists for the 2025 Texas Restaurant Awards by the Texas Restaurant Association—winners will be announced during the awards ceremony on July 20 at 713 Music Hall in Houston. KXXV
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Baylor University is preparing for a busy graduation weekend as four ceremonies are scheduled on Friday, May 16th & today for 4,000 graduates at the Ferrell Center. Visitors and family members are expected to arrive early to allow 90 minutes for parking and screening before each ceremony. KXXV
- ➤ Waco ISD Board President Stephanie Korteweg announced during the May 15 board meeting that she will resign effective May 23. The board must fill her vacancy within 180 days and may hold a special election on November 4 if chosen. KXXV
- ➤ Voters in Robinson turned down a $95 million bond proposal that would have paid for school renovations, safety fixes, and more classroom space — school officials say the district may now need portable classrooms. School leaders warned that without the bond, grade realignment could be delayed — a change that may lead to larger class sizes. KXXV
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Baylor students are ending the school year this weekend while Bear-ly Used, a student-run recycling program, collects gently used dorm items for Habitat for Humanity’s ReStore & two local nonprofits. The program uses 13 portable storage containers for items like furniture, small appliances and clothing, and founders Nolan La and Joshua Yoon will expand it with a student sale next year.
