COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Tunnel to Towers Foundation has paid off the mortgage on the Lorena home of fallen Marine Gunnery Sgt. John Fry as part of a Memorial Day tribute—Fry lost his life in 2006 while serving in Iraq. The foundation supports 25 Gold Star families with its ongoing program.  KXXV
  • Mission Waco Executive Director John Calaway said Creekside Community Village will build 35 tiny homes with shared facilities on University Parks Drive in Waco for residents with local ties and a steady income. Support has come from four local banks, several churches, and a $1 million city pledge—Phase 1 is budgeted at about $14.5 million for property, roads, water, and sewer infrastructure.  Waco Tribune-Herald

  • A shooting in Waco on May 21 left a 36-year-old man dead and a 16-year-old boy injured when officers responded to the 5100 block of Hawthorne Drive at 10:05 p.m.—police are asking the public to share any tips.  KXXV

  • Renters in McLennan County find that two-bedroom apartments are too pricey for minimum wage workers, who need to earn over $25 an hour for a modest home given a 40-hour workweek. Local experts say rising demand and limited housing options are pushing rents higher — widening the affordability gap.  KXXV

  • The Waco-McLennan County Emergency Management Office is asking residents to take a six-minute survey to update its Hazard Mitigation Action Plan (HMAP) that helps lower risks from flooding, wildfires, and severe weather.
