CRIME NEWS
- ➤ A Killeen couple was arrested in York, Maine on May 20 for the death of 41 year old Marcio Maridell Anderson of Copperas Cove — they have been extradited to Texas and are now held in Comanche County Jail — investigators say there is no threat to the public as their inquiry continues. FOX 44
- ➤ Waco police arrested 18-year-old Jarvis Howard, Jr—charged with murder in the May 15th shooting death of Jeromy Munoz on East Waco Drive; a 24-year-old man was taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. FOX 44
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Waco ISD will offer free breakfasts and lunches to all children from birth to 18 as part of its Summer Feeding Program starting Tuesday, May 27 and running through August 6 with closures on June 19 and July 4. The program will serve meals at 11 school cafeterias + 22 community sites and will use mobile food trucks for select neighborhoods. KXXV
- ➤ Teachers and staff at Kendrick Elementary are preparing to welcome students to a new campus this fall after spending last school year in a temporary location. The updated building will serve over 700 students after Alta Vista Elementary closed, and over the summer faculty will move in and add final touches—veteran teacher Kristina Munoz said the campus brings a long-awaited permanence to the school community. - ➤ City of Waco has named four finalists in its search for a new fire chief, including candidates with decades of fire service experience—each set to face a two-day onsite interview with fire department leaders, city officials and community representatives on May 27 and 28. FOX 44
- ➤ A natural gas leak is forcing the closure of Beverly Drive from New Road to the loop in Waco—Atmos Energy and emergency crews are working on repairs with updates coming soon. KCENTV
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Authorities in Waco urged residents to practice water safety as summer nears—experts at the YMCA and Lake Waco stressed that wearing U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jackets and taking swim lessons are key to preventing drownings, especially for young children. Officials added that designated swim beaches at Twin Bridges and Airport Park feature free life jacket loaner stations to keep swimmers safe. FOX 44
