- ➤ Army veteran and Waco High School art teacher Joel Colosimo launched the Warriors Canvas art therapy group on Memorial Day weekend to help local veterans express their emotions through art projects—he plans to host additional workshops across Central Texas. KCENTV
- ➤ Local governments and organizations posted messages on social media to honor fallen service members on Memorial Day. The posts reflect a community effort to remember those who served. KXXV
- ➤ Moody resident Dorothy Sanders is calling for stronger enforcement and community-based solutions to address the town’s loose dog problem (with several reported dog bites) for public safety. She said she will meet with Bruceville-Eddy Police Chief Michael Dorsey to discuss a plan using microchipping and partnerships with the Waco Humane Society (a model that has worked in Bruceville-Eddy) to improve safety in Moody. - ➤ Mart Police seized three illegal eight-line game machines and an illegal pay-out kiosk in Mart after a tip from Bellmead Police on May 13 — officers anticipate arrests as the investigation continues. KCENTV
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Waco ISD trustees voted 4-3 after two hours of discussion to keep the current math curriculum instead of switching to a program from Bluebonnet Learning—citing concerns over its $1.3 million cost, new teaching methods, and uncertain results—despite recommendations from the superintendent and many math teachers. Waco Tribune-Herald
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Bell County farmer Robert Fleming said his century-old farm has changed with thousands of solar panels now on nearby land—raising concerns over water runoff, erosion and property values. He said Senate Bill 819 will require community input and environmental reviews for larger solar projects, but Bell County is still accepting new solar applications under current rules—despite the booming energy market. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Texas House Bill 3157 (allowing interim rate hikes) would let utilities raise electricity rates before regulators finish reviewing the hikes, and critics say the change could lead to higher bills for Waco consumers if overcharges are not fully refunded. Another bill that gives utilities more power over their debt-to-equity ratios passed the House but remains stalled in the Senate. Waco Tribune-Herald
