COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Armstrong's Bayou Cafe in Waco and Woodway is serving free summer meals to kids 12 and under Tuesday through Friday with a goal of feeding 100 children a day*owner Aneka Armstrong said she will use food truck proceeds to support the program and help single mothers*.  KXXV
  • Doris Miller Community Pool at 1020 Elm Ave. offers shark-free swimming with lap sessions, aquatic fitness classes, swim lessons, and lifeguard training—summer hours include fixed sessions on Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday with flexible times on Tuesday and Thursday. The pool is open year-round with a $3 fee for open swim and free entry for children 3 and under.  City of Waco

CULTURE NEWS

  • Central Texas hosts many local events this weekend — the square and round dance festival began on June 12 in Temple at the Frank W. Mayborn Civic and Convention Center, a benefit concert to support historic renovations will take place at Johny's Outback in Salado on Sunday at 7:30 p.m., a farmers market is on today in Harker Heights from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., and the ATG Expo runs today and Sunday at the Waco Convention Center from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.  KCENTV
  • Today the Cen-Tex African American Chamber of Commerce hosts its annual Juneteenth Celebration Parade at 10 a.m. starting at Heritage Square — the parade will end near the old Paul Quinn College as community members gather to honor the emancipation of enslaved African-Americans with music and dancing.  FOX 44
  • ATG Expo is returning to the Waco Convention Center today and tomorrow with gaming, celebrity guests, cosplay contests, and a HOT Pro Wrestling showcase. Attendees can join esports tournaments like Super Smash Bros. Ultimate and Street Fighter 6 and try the new 254 Baggerz Bowl Cornhole Tournament with cash prizes — and they will also enjoy Q&A panels with popular voice actors.  FOX 44

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Waco ISD began construction on a new campus yesterday while several local school districts opened their cafeterias during the summer to offer free meals for families battling food insecurity. The Feed the Need campaign raised funds and awareness, and local officials + volunteers urged the community to donate and help ensure no child goes hungry.  KXXV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • City officials are containing and cleaning up 110,600 gallons of sewer overflow—brought on by heavy rains that overwhelmed the system at 15 sites in Waco. City workers disinfect streets and storm drains while boat docks and parks are closed until they reopen for Fourth of July celebrations.  KCENTV
  • McLennan County commissioners will vote on July 15 to issue $30 million in certificates of obligation for upgrading bridges, roads, and dams in Precinct 2—projects that aim to fix aging infrastructure across Waco and surrounding areas. The funds will be used on contracts with private firms—helping to secure state matching grants and improve local transportation and flood control.  Waco Tribune-Herald
  • After heavy rain on Thursday flooded 14 areas, Waco Public Works activated a real-time sewer overflow detection system to launch sanitation efforts. Local landscaper Simon Alquinson said persistent drainage issues troubled neighborhoods and outdoor work — officials urge residents to report severe problems for quick repairs.  KXXV
