ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Grant Herridge died June 8th from a hiking accident at Olympic National Park while doing what he loved, with Vanguard College Preparatory School praising his bright spirit and Baylor University planning a memorial visitation on June 18th and a service on June 20th (he was a rising freshman).  FOX 44

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Tribune-Herald released its final list of top high school graduates in McLennan County, showcasing students from local schools who earned academic honors and will attend various universities. The list features achievers like Roy Carney of Rapopport Academy Meyer High, whose awards come from academic competitions+ leadership roles in extracurricular programs.  Waco Tribune-Herald

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A congressional budget proposal will cut much of the federal funding EOAC relies on for Head Start centers, utility assistance, and job training programs in Waco. With over 95% of its budget federally funded, the nonprofit has hired a new director of advancement—Patrick Turkett— to build private donor relationships if the funding is not restored.  Waco Tribune-Herald

SPORTS NEWS

  • Waco's University football player Davontrae Kirkland, a four-star rated athlete, announced with Dave Campbell's Texas Football that he is staying home to play for Baylor this season despite offers (Texas A&M, TCU, Houston, Texas Tech and Oklahoma). He will reunite with former head coach Kaeron Johnson.  KXXV
  • On Saturday, Rapoport’s state champion Ravens led Waco’s Juneteenth parade as grand marshals, riding upfront and displaying their state championship trophy along Washington Avenue — a moment that marked their rise from underdogs to local legends. Coach Turmaine Rice said the team celebrated their win and will soon begin training in their new gym, Raven Court, which is slated to open mid- to late-July.  Waco Tribune-Herald
  • McLennan baseball head coach Tyler Johnson has left MCC to join Dallas Baptist University as Assistant coach and recruiting coordinator. He coached MCC to a 48-18 record and a semifinal run in the NJCAA Division 1 World Series last season — a move that follows his earlier success as an assistant when his team won a national championship.  KXXV
