COMMUNITY NEWS

  • After 28 years of leading Fuzzy Friends Rescue, founder Betsy Robinson will retire and become Executive Director Emeritus — longtime board member Sam Brown will take over as Executive Director. Robinson will advise the organization during the transition — ensuring the shelter continues to care for local animals.  FOX 44
  • Armstrong’s Bayou Cafe launched a free lunch program for children 12 and younger—running Tuesday through Saturday from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.—to fill the summer food gap until school resumes. The program has already served 507 meals as of June 18th at its Union Hall and Woodway Drive locations and costs about $9 per meal while the owner hopes to expand it to serve 100 meals daily.  KCENTV

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Waco Fire Department crews quickly controlled a house fire at 3317 Bagby Avenue caused by a faulty AC unit cord—displacing three residents and possibly claiming a family dog.  KXXV
  • A GoFundMe fundraiser set up to benefit the family of 35-year-old Avinlea Yeatman—who died after a motorcycle crash with a Toyota Prius on Bosque Boulevard and 46th Street earlier this week—will help cover her funeral costs and support her husband and three children.  FOX 44

CRIME NEWS

  • Bobbie Daniel Molina, a 30-year-old man, pleaded guilty to intoxication manslaughter in a Robinson crash that killed two people in 2022 and received a 10-year prison sentence from Judge Thomas West — police said his Ford Taurus hit a travel trailer, causing the vehicle to flip.  FOX 44
  • A McLennan County Grand Jury indicted Bobby Doyle Getts for murdering Eddie Sanders, whose body was found near Elm Mott in March after deputies and DPS troopers responded to a reported traffic crash on southbound I-35 near the 345 mile post at 3:30 a.m. on March 27—Getts was taken into custody and booked into McLennan County Jail with a $1,000,000 bond.  FOX 44

CULTURE NEWS

  • The New Growth exhibit, celebrating Juneteenth and black culture through art about hair, opened May 22 in collaboration with A Beautiful Message and Art Center Waco. The show, featuring 14 local African-American artists and curated by Vincent Thomas and Bella Perez, runs until June 26 and is open from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. *It highlights styles that reflect both historical and modern experiences*.  FOX 44

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The City of Waco approved a grant on June 19 to pay for the construction of the Lovely Village apartment complex+ it will provide a safe haven for victims of sexual exploitation, trauma, and trafficking.  FOX 44
  • The city is buying a 1.3-acre site from the Pinewood Coffee Bar owners for a new Austin Avenue park — the deal lets the business sell concessions in the park.  Waco Tribune-Herald
