CRIME NEWS

  • A McLennan County grand jury indicted a 63-year-old Ross man on a murder charge for a March shooting that led to an I-35 crash.  Waco Tribune-Herald

CULTURE NEWS

  • Cameron Park Zoo in Waco is hosting special animal encounters and educational events every other day this month—efforts that help visitors learn about conservation and the challenges wild animals face. Zoo Director Brendan Wiley said the events are designed to build empathy for wildlife—supporting the zoo's mission to protect animals.  FOX 44

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Gov. Greg Abbott signed House Bill 1481 yesterday, and Texas public and open-enrollment charter schools must ban student cellphone use during school hours by adopting a formal policy within 90 days — districts can either completely ban devices or require students to store them.  KCENTV
  • La Vega ISD held a ribbon cutting and open house today at the newly remodeled and expanded Field House at Willie Williams Stadium. The 7,000sf space now houses updated weight room equipment while the former weight room has been converted into locker rooms, laundry facilities, a film room — team meeting rooms.  KXXV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • TxDOT began reducing I-35 lanes to two in each direction on Monday for a four-year project that covers the stretch between 12th Street and South Loop 340. The agency will move traffic to the southbound section for at least one month and close several northbound exits—rebuilding the interstate to expand from six to eight lanes and improve safety.  KCENTV
  • The Waco City Council approved a $5.99 million contract last week to replace a 1960s firehouse on Speight Ave with a modern facility to be built on La Salle Ave for Baylor-area services.  Waco Tribune-Herald
