EDUCATION NEWS

  • Local artists are painting legacy murals in the new Waco High School as a tribute to the school’s history ahead of teacher move-in in three weeks. Will Suarez leads work on a 32-foot mural at the Colcord Avenue entrance—showing the lion, ram and tiger mascots from three high schools that formed modern Waco High in 1986.  Waco Tribune-Herald

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A downtown plaza on 7th Street between Austin and Franklin is being revitalized to add interactive murals, new lighting, and upcycled furniture to boost foot traffic for local businesses. City Center Waco and Creative Waco are managing the project, which costs $102,000 this year and has faced delays due to weather.  KXXV
  • City officials in Waco reminded residents on June 28 that fireworks are illegal in the city limits — only small sparklers are allowed. Officials warned that fireworks can cause harm to people and pets — professionals should handle any displays to keep everyone safe.  FOX 44
  • Waco City Council approved a deal with Viridi Energy LLC to capture and process natural gas from the Old Lorena Road landfill—set to close early next year—to earn $10.8M over 20 years. Construction will begin next month and operations are expected to start by the end of next year with royalties starting at 7.81% of gross revenue, later dropping to 6%.  Waco Tribune-Herald

SPORTS NEWS

  • Midway High School senior golfer Paityn Carter shot an even par 72 to qualify for the USGA Junior tournament in Georgia—she is the first from Midway to reach this stage and plans to play in more tournaments during her senior year.  KXXV
  • Former Baylor basketball player Norchad Omier signed an Exhibit 10 contract with the Cleveland Cavaliers after going undrafted, giving him a chance to try out for a roster spot in the summer league or G League—he averaged nearly 16 points and 11 rebounds per game and finished with 90 double-doubles in college.  KXXV
  • Baylor football signed local players for the 2025 to 2026 season including Davion Peters from Lake Belton High and Jamarion Vincent from Connally to boost the team. The team also hired former University High coach Kaeron Johnson (a move that shows a focus on local talent) after a turnaround in recent seasons.  KXXV
