Here's your local news at a glance for Wednesday, the 5th of August.
Good morning, Waco.
🏘️ Community
A first time Salvation Army volunteer from Waco traveled to Uvalde County after recent flooding and helped serve 16,000 meals over 10 days.
She said the experience reminded her that everyday volunteer work supports community recovery (volunteer opportunities remain available).
🏛️ Government
The McLennan County Commissioner's Court voted Tuesday to ban outdoor burning.
The ban now prohibits open fires countywide (aimed at reducing fire risks).
Mark Blanpied — a longtime organic pecan farmer at Chalk Bluff — warned that a proposed wastewater treatment plant could contaminate his well and endanger his business if runoff occurs.
The City Council will review the annexation proposal on Aug. 18 without committing to a treatment plant.
🏥 Health
A Baylor police supervisor became paralyzed after surgery, and local residents rallied today to support his family (neighbors are coordinating meal deliveries and caregiving services).
📰 Real Estate
Hyatt Place in downtown Waco is set to open as the developer resumes work following a 2023 groundbreaking delayed by the pandemic.
The project is slowly progressing toward completion.
