Good morning, Waco. Here's your local news at a glance for Friday, the 8th of August.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Waco’s Advocacy Center for Crime Victims and Children received a $50,000 grant from JE Dunn Construction. The funds will support programs to reduce violence and educate students through community outreach and paid internships — steps meant to keep our community safer.  KCENTV

CRIME NEWS

  • Criminologist Dr. Alex Del Carmen warned parents in Waco that posting school photos with personal details like names and school info can expose children to identity theft risks. He advised turning off location services and sharing images privately — using apps to remove background details that could reveal where they live.  KXXV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Waco ISD has stopped using cell phones and other personal devices during school hours as required by House Bill 1481. The district now has strict rules—students with devices in view will have them taken until the following school day and parents are advised to talk with their children about the new policy.  KCENTV
  • Killeen ISD will enforce a year-long clear backpack policy when school begins, and former educator and child therapist Lan Carter (who once ran for school board) says the rule is more symbolic than effective in keeping students safe. She also said the measure may add extra cost for families without really stopping hidden items.  KXXV
  • Texas passed House Bill 2 to boost teacher certification by requiring tests in core subjects and waiving exam fees for bilingual and special educators—helping schools move away from hiring uncertified teachers. Jessica McLoughlin from the Texas Education Agency said these changes will support long-term classroom success.  KXXV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Yesterday, the city celebrated the groundbreaking of a new 8,600-square-foot fire station on La Salle Avenue (between 8th and 9th Streets) at 10:00 a.m. as the facility will replace the Speight Avenue station near Baylor and serve a growing apartment area, with an opening expected in 2027.  KXXV
  • Today, the Waco City Council proposed holding the property tax rate steady, a plan that will mean higher bills for homeowners + rising property values make the increase unavoidable + the proposal aims to keep the rate flat despite shifting market values.  Waco Tribune-Herald
  • Waco Transit will offer free rides on all fixed–route buses on Saturday, August 9 to help families and teachers save during the tax–free school supplies weekend from August 8-10. Riders can track buses in real time using the Ride Systems app—providing a convenient way to plan their trips.  KXXV
