- ➤ A local nonprofit has partnered with Southern Careers Institute to offer free trade school sessions that show residents affordable career options beyond a four-year degree. HVAC technicians may earn $18 — $25 per hour with benefits including health insurance, a company vehicle, and 401K plans. KXXV

- ➤ A Woodway man accused of setting a fire inside a Waco psychiatric hospital and punching an employee multiple times was arrested last week (police said). Waco Tribune-Herald
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Baylor University filed a lawsuit in Waco's federal court on Friday—accusing Boston University of ignoring its requests to stop using the interlocking BU logo. Waco Tribune-Herald
- ➤ Texas law now bans cellphones, smartwatches, and tablets from use during the entire school day including lunch under House Bill 1481. School districts such as Waco ISD and Midway support the ban for better classroom focus—though some parents worry about reaching their children in emergencies. KXXV
- ➤ Kendrick Elementary opened a new campus today that features a library designed to inspire creativity and a pottery kiln for art classes. The building serves over 750 students from pre-k to fifth grade and organizes each grade into a color-coded neighborhood to help students recognize their space. KXXV

- ➤ Waco father and construction worker Noe Guerrero remains detained by ICE after charges for lacking proper documents were dropped, and his attorney said ICE has not explained the detention—Guerrero faces an immigration bond hearing on August 14 at the Montgomery Processing Center with a request for the statutory minimum bond of $1,500 so he may return home by the weekend.
