CRIME NEWS

  • A federal judge granted bond for Noe Guerrero, a Waco father of three arrested three weeks ago for not carrying his required immigration documents, but he remains in federal custody because ICE has a stay to appeal the decision.  KXXV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • McGregor ISD has joined the state TIA program to award high-performing teachers bonuses of $6,000 to over $20,000 and boost student success. The district will begin with reading, math, English & Algebra teachers from Pre-K through high school and plans to include more eligible educators over the next three years.  KXXV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A nearly 200-mile, 765-kilovolt transmission project by LCRA Transmission Services and Oncor is raising concerns in Salado as residents worry about property values, health risks, and unclear public input—local Representative Brad Buckley and homeowners urge more transparency ahead of the project's planned 2030 operation. Residents fear that the massive towers could force relocations and disrupt community life if the proposed route is approved.  KCENTV
  • City of Waco offices will be closed on Monday, September 1 for Labor Day, and several City services will follow alternate schedules—trash collection for some residents will shift to Wednesday while the drive-thru utility office and local libraries will be closed. Key attractions such as Cameron Park Zoo, Texas Ranger Hall of Fame and Museum, Waco Mammoth National Monument, and Cottonwood Creek Golf Course will remain open.  City of Waco
  • Cameron Park Zoo is exploring a shift to nonprofit operation while the city keeps ownership—this change could save taxpayers $600,000 a year and support the zoo's growth as it plans to boost visitors and hire more staff to meet new standards.  KXXV
  • Waco has $25.8 million to remove lead pipes from its water system; a $20 million federal loan plus a $5.8 million local match was approved and will fund free replacement of customer-side pipes. City officials found 138 lead lines and plan to replace all nearby galvanized lines to meet updated EPA rules — ensuring safe drinking water for residents.  Waco Tribune-Herald
