ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A building at the Chevy of West dealership caught fire Thursday morning before 10 a.m.—volunteer fire departments responded quickly to control the blaze and close nearby roads, and officials confirmed the structure is a total loss.  KXXV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Waco ISD released a statement on Friday after the Texas Education Agency gave the district a D rating and outlined a strategic plan to boost student growth, including creating an Office of School Leadership—set to guide new curriculum and schedule changes for improved academic outcomes.  KCENTV
  • The Vanek triplets from Crawford excel at McLennan Community College as Mason and Brady study mechanical engineering and Grace works toward a career in animal pharmaceutical sales—after their team placed second in a national NASA contest. The brothers will transfer to Texas Tech this fall while Grace finishes her coursework at MCC.  KCENTV
  • Yesterday, the Texas Education Agency released accountability scores showing Waco ISD earned an overall D with three schools—Dean Highland Elementary, South Waco Elementary, and G.W. Carver Middle School—receiving consecutive F's that risk state intervention. Superintendent Tiffany Spicer said the district will use its new strategic plan and targeted supports to improve student achievement moving forward.  Waco Tribune-Herald

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Waco City Manager Bradley Ford earns nearly $468,000 a year while the city manages $1.7 billion in debt — most of which is paid by user fees and not by property taxes that cost homeowners about $28 a month. City officials say his salary reflects the complexity of managing the city's many services and investments.  KXXV
  • Waco approved a two-year agreement to pay one dairy up to $450,000 to haul manure away from the North Bosque watershed and test measures to protect drinking water. The city will monitor water quality at affected and unaffected sites—hoping to secure further state or federal funding for similar efforts.  Waco Tribune-Herald

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Seventh & James Baptist Church is selling roughly half of its 4.6 acres for a student housing complex with six floors and 300 units adjacent to Baylor, and the church will use sale proceeds to build a new sanctuary and welcome center on the remaining land. Developer Parallel Collective aims to complete the project by summer 2028 pending a planned unit development hearing on Aug. 26.  Waco Tribune-Herald

  • Baylor Football is hosting the Meet the Bears fan fest today at the Allison Indoor Practice Facility starting at 1 p.m.—fans can get autographs from the 2025 roster and enjoy booths for merchandise and a kids zone.
