CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Waco Police are investigating a questionable death after a Dodge Caravan was found in the Brazos River Monday morning—police said a 39-year-old Hispanic woman was discovered inside the vehicle shortly after 10 a.m. and her cause of death remains unknown. KXXV
- ➤ A man accused of robbing a Waco liquor store last week is jailed on two dozen charges—14 counts of theft as filed by Waco and Bellmead police. Waco Tribune-Herald
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Waco ISD received a 'D' accountability rating for the 2024-2025 school year for the fourth consecutive year as every school earned low scores. Superintendent Tiffany Spicer said the STAAR test does not capture all student success and the district will work on a turnaround plan—facing challenges from an 88% economically disadvantaged student body. - ➤ Waco ISD got a D rating from the Texas Education Agency for the 2024-25 school year because 13 of its 15 elementary schools, including South Waco Elementary, got failing marks for student achievement, with the latter failing for the fourth year in a row. The district will use targeted strategies to help students and improve instruction as it waits for further guidance from the agency. KXXV

- ➤ Kenrich Williams, a hometown NBA player, was honored with a Key to the City on Saturday, August 16 after helping lead the Oklahoma City Thunder to an NBA championship—Waco Mayor Jim Holmes praised his achievements and community work and declared August 5 as Kenrich Williams Day. KCENTV
- ➤ Robinson Police Chief Danny Smith announced his retirement with his last day set for Aug. 29—he began his law enforcement career in 1971 and advanced to lead the department to Accredited Agency status. KXXV
- ➤ City leaders in Waco are reviewing $134.2 million in capital project funding for the 2026 budget — including $26.1 million in cash and $108.1 million in debt. They will vote on these proposals soon. Waco Tribune-Herald
