CRIME NEWS

  • Attorneys proposed a trial date for a federal lawsuit filed by Tosheena Dean over the 2019 Temple police shooting that killed Michael Dean — the trial will begin Feb. 5 in Waco. A hearing will be held on Aug. 27 to discuss the proposal and fact discovery will end in May with expert discovery finishing in September.  KCENTV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Yesterday, Baylor University student move-in day began at (8:00 a.m.) in Waco, causing traffic delays while Texas A&M kicked off Howdy Week (College Station) and many Central Texas school districts resumed classes.  KXXV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • China Spring ISD Board approved a 3.7-cent tax rate decrease and scheduled a voter-approval election for November 4—early voting starts October 20. The plan will raise about $2.16 million each year for teacher salaries and student programs while keeping the rate lower than last year.  KXXV
  • Residents raised safety concerns at the rural intersection of Levi Parkway and Bullhide Creek Road, and TxDOT crews cleared obstructing branches on Tuesday to improve driver safety. TxDOT explained the saplings were removed for safety reasons — work restrictions under environmental laws will automatically lift on September 16 as the area is monitored.  KXXV
  • A governance study by Canopy Strategic Partners found that Cameron Park Zoo could save $4.8 million over seven years by switching to a nonprofit management model — mainly by reducing staff benefits, with a projected $2.5 million surplus starting in 2028 compared to a $2.3 million deficit today. City officials and the zoo society plan to review deferred maintenance and capital improvements as they decide on the best path forward.  Waco Tribune-Herald

HEALTH NEWS

  • Crawford Emergency Medical Services shut down on August 19 due to volunteer shortages and strict certification requirements, which forces the community to rely on outside providers for emergency care. American Medical Response+ Coryell Health will now cover the area with Advanced Life Support service.  KCENTV

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • A historic HEB building on Austin Avenue is being transformed into Garden City Grocery by developer Peter Ellis—he plans to bring modern grocery shopping with local products, retail shops, lofts, and about 100 parking spaces to the landmark. The 40,000-square-foot structure, which had been empty for 70 years, is expected to open by winter or spring.  KXXV

SPORTS NEWS

  • Baylor football has announced they will honor Alex Foster during the 2025 season by wearing a helmet decal and holding a moment of silence—Foster was fatally shot in his hometown of Greenville, Mississippi. His family will attend the season opener against Auburn on August 29 at 7:00 p.m.  KXXV
  • The Midway Panthers begin their second season with head coach Joe Gillespie after finishing last year with seven wins to four losses and they aim to win the district—facing Round Rock Westwood on August 28.  KXXV
