CRIME NEWS

  • Waco Police arrested 17-year-old LaVega basketball player Kobe Williams after a vehicle chase involving gunfire late Saturday (he faces a state jail felony and four misdemeanor charges) in Waco.  Waco Tribune-Herald
  • Bellmead Police arrested Robert Eugene Evans II, 41, for second-degree felony robbery after he and a co-defendant took $50 from a driver who had received the money from a Lacy Lakeview officer to ease the loss from a car fire in April—surveillance video shows the suspects led the motorist to a remote area and assaulted him before fleeing.  Waco Tribune-Herald
  • Waco police investigated a two-vehicle crash on China Spring Road after a green Dodge Ram turning left collided with a southbound silver Dodge Ram Sunday afternoon, killing a 72-year-old passenger—no arrests have been made.  Waco Tribune-Herald

EDUCATION NEWS

  • From September 1 to 30, the Waco-McLennan County Libraries are offering fine forgiveness for overdue or lost items and new library card sign-ups enter patrons in prize drawings (including a Dr Pepper Museum gift basket and mystery book bags by age group). Director Roberto Zapata said the limited edition library cards with new barcodes aim to reconnect the community with programs and digital resources.  City of Waco

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Waco City Council will vote Tuesday night on a budget that will raise average homeowner costs by $134 annually due to higher fees for water, wastewater, drainage, and street maintenance — the new budget takes effect Oct. 1.  KXXV
  • Waco Regional Airport will start charging $5.75 for parking next month after the city council voted Tuesday to shift the funding from taxpayers to users—city officials say the fee will help the airport become self-funded and is expected to generate about $402,000 annually.  Waco Tribune-Herald
  • Waco residents found that city council meeting agendas are now on a new webpage accessed via the city’s OneMeeting system—this change started Tuesday to offer easier viewing on phones and tablets. The old agenda platform will remain available until all content is transferred.  Waco Tribune-Herald

  • Cordova Springs will repurpose the old Floyd Casey stadium lot in South Waco with 260 single-family and 96 multi-family homes—construction starts late this month and finishes by 2030 while the project focuses on neighborly front porches and a central location near downtown and Baylor.  KCENTV

  • Baylor lost its opener to Auburn and will face SMU in its first road game on Saturday at 11 a.m. — the team hopes the loss will help it learn and rebound — as it aims to improve its play this season.  KXXV
