- ➤ Central Texas communities will host commemorative ceremonies on Thursday to remember the September 11 terror attacks that took 2,977 lives. Waco fire stations will mark the day with moments of silence at 7:40, 7:46, 8:03, 8:37 and 9:03 a.m.—each time set to honor distinct moments from the events. KXXV
ACCIDENTS NEWS
- ➤ A plane made an emergency landing Monday morning at Waco Regional Airport because of a smoke smell onboard—passengers and crew disembarked safely—and it was turned over to Texas Aero for further investigation. KXXV
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ The Lacy Lakeview Police Department is investigating animal abuse at a local business after a video surfaced on social media—officers are gathering evidence and working with the business to identify the suspected party. KXXV
- ➤ Lacy Lakeview police are investigating a surveillance video showing a person beating a dog outside a local business—officers say the incident has sparked strong community concern. Waco Tribune-Herald
- ➤ A 27-year-old Marlin man—Tommy Ezekiel Zachaus Lee Dean—injured a Beverly Hills officer by running over his foot and ankle during a Sept. 6 traffic stop for a lighting equipment violation after officials discovered an outstanding warrant; he fled, his vehicle struck a concrete pole, and officers with help from Waco police later arrested him while the injured officer was treated and released at Hillcrest Hospital. EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Academy ISD in Little River-Academy received a $330,535 grant from the Texas Workforce Commission in August to expand its Future Health Professionals program now serving more than 200 students. The program lets students practice on high-tech mannequins—preparing them for certifications and clinical rotations at Baylor Scott & White. KCENTV
- ➤ Students from Rapoport, Connally, Crawford and Mart shined at the UIL Academic and Speech State Championships held May 14-15 at UT Austin as nearly six dozen competitors earned titles, medals and wild-card entries from district meets. Notable wins include Connally’s Glyn McDaniel receiving the Tops in Texas award in news writing and Marco Cunningham securing gold in UIL Class 2A science — other teams from Fairfield, Midway and Crawford also earned state medals.
