BUSINESS NEWS

  • On Monday, Tia Juanita’s Fish Camp opened in the old Twin Peaks building—its remodel restored the space while serving Tex-Mex and Cajun dishes to about 170 diners. In East Waco, Tru Jamaica reopened after a nearly three-year hiatus due to a fire—now serving Jamaican fare that brings fresh energy to the local dining scene.  Waco Tribune-Herald
  • Mucho Gusto Supermercado will open later this month in the former Jubilee Market at 15th Street and Colcord Avenue and will take over the former CVS pharmacy space in South Waco later this year. CULTURE NEWS

  • Waco arts groups have received a $161,229 grant from the Texas Commission for the Arts—funding that may help ease the impact of recent federal cuts on local projects. Local organizations will plan next steps to use the money where it is needed most.  Waco Tribune-Herald

  • City leaders in Hewitt and McGregor are checking sales tax data to learn why revenue dropped – they plan to use the findings to guide future changes. Officials in Waco are watching spending closely and working to keep strong growth.  Waco Tribune-Herald

EDUCATION NEWS

  • During his Tuesday visit in Waco, Comptroller Hancock told TSTC leaders that the state’s voucher program will benefit the college—making it busier in higher education.  Waco Tribune-Herald

  • On Tuesday, September 9, Mayor Jim Holmes presented the State of the City address at the Greater Waco Chamber of Commerce event—he said the city is growing with improved services, stronger infrastructure, and a resilient economy for local families.  City of Waco

HEALTH NEWS

  • Killeen woman Sandra Youngblood discovered she had Chagas disease after donating blood in Florida in 2018 and went through many tests, including heart exams and EKGs, to track her slow-progressing illness—her next checkup is set for 2032. She urges others to donate blood early to catch the disease before it becomes more severe.  KCENTV

  • The Baylor Bears built momentum after an overtime win against SMU in Dallas and will face Samford at home at 11:00 a.m. Saturday.  KXXV
  • Midway running back Lathan Whisenton earned Player of the Week honors after running for 210 yards and scoring four touchdowns on 12 carries so far this season.
