CRIME NEWS

  • Conservative activist Charlie Kirk was shot and killed during an event at Utah Valley University Wednesday, and Baylor students in Waco reacted with shock when they learned the news on campus—some condemned the act as an instance of political violence while expressing sympathy for his family.  KXXV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Midway ISD removed a student-teaching intern from Midway Middle School after he posted inappropriate comments online about Charlie Kirk's death—Baylor University identified him as AJ Barber and he was pulled immediately to protect the school's environment.  KXXV
  • Midway ISD removed a Baylor student teacher after he posted an inappropriate social media comment saying 'this made me giggle' about the shooting of Charlie Kirk — both the district and Baylor University said his remark did not meet their standards and he will no longer be present with students.  KCENTV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Today, TxDOT crews begin demolishing the I-35 bridge over New Road as part of the MY35 Waco South expansion project, causing full weekend lane closures and detours. Residents and workers worry about heavy traffic and school safety — crews plan to reopen all lanes by 7:00 a.m. Monday.  KXXV
  • Protesters gathered outside McLennan Community College on Thursday evening to voice their concerns over Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh speaking as part of the Ken Starr Lecture Series—local organizers and law enforcement worked together to ensure a safe event amid concerns raised by a recent fatal shooting in Utah.  KXXV

HEALTH NEWS

  • Veterans in the Now What? group in Temple protested the VA’s plan to move their life-saving in-person group therapy online, saying this change will break the strong bond developed over 10 years—staff from Rep. Hillary Hickland’s and Congressman John Carter’s offices met with the group to request that a new mental health counselor be assigned to keep the sessions face-to-face.  KCENTV
