- ➤ A new landfill in Axtell opened on Oct. 1 but will not accept residents' trash until it opens to the public in spring. The City of Waco said the facility is needed as the current landfill nears capacity and includes buffer zones, covered waste, and limited daytime operation to reduce odor and noise. KXXV

- ➤ Drivers in Waco are advised that the My35 Waco South Project will close Irving Lee St. at the southbound I-35 frontage road and Belmont Dr. starting Tuesday, Oct. 7—crews will work on drainage and utility improvements until early November. KXXV

- ➤ Fire Prevention Week, with the theme 'Charge into Fire Safety: Know the Risks of Lithium-Ion Batteries,' will run from October 5 to 11 and will remind residents to safely use lithium-ion batteries in everyday devices—buying products with safety marks, using proper chargers, and recycling batteries responsibly. - ➤ Waco is hosting its 7th annual Ironman 70.3, kicking off today with the Iron Kids competition and continuing on Oct. 5 with the main event. The race features a 1.2-mile swim, a 56-mile bike ride, and a 13.1-mile run—drawing global athletes and 1,500 volunteers—while it is expected to boost the local economy by $6 to 8 million. KCENTV
