- ➤ Waco broke ground on Alice Martinez Rodriguez Park on October 4—officially starting construction on the $25 million project to transform 30 acres along Clay Avenue into an inclusive park with a playground, sports courts, and natural areas along Waco Creek. The park, dedicated to former councilmember Alice Rodriguez, is scheduled to open in fall 2026. City of Waco
- ➤ The Heart O’ Texas Fair & Rodeo is drawing large crowds to the Extraco Events Center as over 200,000 visitors enjoy rides, concerts, and food and boost the local economy by $70 million. The fair runs until Oct. 12 — it features new food vendors and nightly rodeo finals. KCENTV
ACCIDENTS NEWS
- ➤ At Ironman 70.3 Waco, 68-year-old triathlete and pharmacist Dave Mattingly suffered a medical emergency during the swim—he got immediate help and was taken to a hospital where he later died—with his family still waiting for autopsy results in Dallas. KCENTV
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Connally ISD will not appeal its failing scores as it waits for a TEA decision on possible campus closures or a state takeover, with the decision expected from November to January—district officials are testing turnaround plans to improve student outcomes. The TEA letter stated that transformational change is needed for better results. KXXV
- ➤ Midway Independent School District will appoint a replacement for board President Pete Rusek—who will become a judge at Waco's 74th State District Court in December—to keep the board fully staffed. Waco Tribune-Herald
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Today at 6 p.m., the City of Waco and Waco ISD meet at the Waco Convention Center to discuss a real estate deal for the former Indian Springs Middle School property that may close by November 14. Hillsboro City Council holds a public hearing at 6 p.m. on a proposed 20% water rate increase—Irving Lee St. will be closed on the southbound I-35 frontage road for drainage and utility work until early November.
