COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Gary Combs of Waco has hosted an elaborate Halloween display since 2011 and added a sensory-friendly night two years ago for children with cochlear implants—designed to offer a calmer experience. The event is set for October 25 from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at 2519 N 21st St and will return with full effects on Halloween night for traditional trick-or-treaters.  KCENTV

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Jesus Rodriguez launched his food truck, Chulada de Maiz, after Cultura Mia closed five months ago, serving traditional chilaquiles and coffee today outside The Common Grounds on Franklin Avenue from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.—a nod to family recipes passed down from his mother.  KXXV

CULTURE NEWS

  • A donation is funding weekend events at Waco Mammoth National Monument amid the federal shutdown—guided tours resume on the next two weekends and the Dig Shelter will open on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays for the next two weeks while the Welcome Center, outdoor exhibits, and gift shop remain open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.  KXXV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Texas Gov. Greg Abbott announced new measures to enforce hemp-derived THC laws as DPS will soon launch undercover operations at smoke shops across the state—industry operators welcomed the move to curb unregulated sales and enhance child safety. This initiative shows an effort to coordinate local, state, and federal authorities in tightening controls on THC products.  KCENTV
  • Waco officials announced a new $45 million overpass at Franklin Avenue and New Road to ease traffic for over 20,000 daily drivers—bidding will begin at the end of next year and construction is expected to take two years.  KXXV

SPORTS NEWS

  • Baylor Bears beat Kansas State with a last-second block of a field goal and now begin their bye week at 4-2. Quarterback Sawyer Robertson leads the nation in passing and coach Dave Aranda will help younger players—preparing the team for its next game against TCU.  KXXV
  • Harker Heights senior running back Jaylen “Munchy” Mason earned the KCEN Week 6 Player of the Week after he rushed for 125 yards and scored two touchdowns in Harker Heights' 45—15 win over Killeen last Friday. He leads district rushers with 674 yards on 77 carries and received his first college offer from Nelson University while his team will take on Bryan tomorrow at 7 p.m.  KCENTV
